Child Protection Awareness

Statutory training meeting the requirement of the ‘robust 3-yearly training’ for whole staff communities. This course is essential for all staff working within an education setting.

Exploring Duty of Care in line with Local Safeguarding Children Partnership (formally LSCB) procedures, this training promotes:

  • Understanding of national guidance and procedures,
  • Recognising the four categories of abuse
  • Listening to children
  • Awareness raising of key challenges including Online Safety, Radicalisation, Criminal Exploitation (including County Lines and Child Sexual Exploitation) and HBV (Honour- Based Violence including FGM – Female Genital Mutilation)

Annual update

Child Protection is a highly specialised field and often Designated Safeguarding Teams feel more comfortable accessing outside trainers to provide this training. Keeping Children Safe in Education (September 2019) states that staff are to receive an annual update on Child Protection and Safeguarding.  

We can work with all staff and provide a complete update to cover all new legislation, latest trends and issues.

Designated Safeguarding Lead / Advanced Child Protection


Education professionals with a lead or designated professional role for safeguarding

Statutory requirement for education professionals meeting ‘robust 2-yearly training’ for those with a lead or designated professional role for safeguarding in schools. Having completed basic safeguarding training, this course equips professionals to perform their senior safeguarding function in schools.

Course content includes:

  • Latest legislation and procedures – reflecting the Education Acts and Keeping Children
  • Safe in Education (September 2019)
  • Policy development
  • Awareness of multi-agency working
  • Information sharing
  • The referral processes
  • Thresholds or risk analysis within the content of children and young people
  • Management of safeguarding with staff and within schools – including the response to sexual violence and sexual harassment
  • Challenging topics are also explored from a management level

Safer Recruitment

Introducing guidance, child protection processes and procedures, roles and responsibilities of governors, the categories of abuse and an insight into inspection standards for safeguarding children.

Raising awareness of the Prevent Duty

The Prevent Duty guidance (June 2015) refers to the importance of Prevent awareness training to equip staff to identify children at risk of being drawn into terrorism and to develop confidence in challenging extremist views. This interactive session explores the context of the Prevent Duty within education, including clear and concise guidance around the ‘due regard’ to the duty – as well as an exploration of the implementation of the ‘British vales’ in practice. Course content includes:

  • Identifying indicators of radicalisation including influential factors
  • Implementing the legal due regard
  • Reality of the current threat
  • Understanding what to do in an emergency
  • Exploration of case studies
  • How and when to make a referral
  • Implementing the British values within the curriculum
  • Developing strategies to directly challenge extremist behavior

Implementation of the Prevent Duty

This 2 hour course is a light-bite ‘must’ for senior leadership to develop a rolling action plan to ensure compliance with all aspects of the current Prevent Duty. Course content includes: 

  • Understanding the latest UK counter terrorism strategy
  • Role of senior leadership and the designated safeguarding team
  • Institutional responsibilities
  • Staff confidence and competency in challenging
  • Effective risk assessments and developing the action plan
  • Working in partnership
  • Recognition of risk - the ‘push’ and ‘pull’ factors in radicalisation

In ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children (July 2018)’ all settings are advised of their organisational responsibility from Section 11 of the Children Act 2004:

Chapter 2 

“…practitioners should be given sufficient time, funding, SUPERVISION and support to fulfil their child welfare and safeguarding responsibilities effectively. …appropriate SUPERVISION and support for staff, including undertaking safeguarding training.”

ECP provides this specialist supervision by NSPCC-trained staff with over 20 years’ experience in the field of child protection. This will enable professionals to reflect on their own practice and the impact of cases on both the victim and themselves as frontline staff who work with those children who have suffered abuse.
